A little ditty on Love.
Love - I love this word.
A few months ago I took a big risk. I hadn’t dated since my divorce and I was really working on recreating my life. I got a new apartment, joined a great health club, had my great job, and had a full social calendar. I really wanted to share that with someone, but I didn’t know how to go about it.
I asked around and was recommended to many books, social groups, and nightclubs. I even came up with my own idea to go to an art gallery and make a point of introducing myself. It would just be practice. I also updated my profile on a major dating service’s website.
I decided to take the jump and start sending out responses to other people’s personal ads. Although it was dry for awhile, I suddenly had a weekend where I had three dates. And I knew in my heart that none of those three dates were meant for me. Afterall, I wasn’t really ready to love myself, right?
Then I looked at the personals again in another attempt to find my true love, my one and only. I saw a photo of cute guy with a goatee and a serious face calling himself Lane and thought I’d click on his profile. In his profile were other pictures of himself with a cute cherubic smile that I had seen for months while looking at the personals pages. I was totally taken by this guy who could look two very different ways. So I figured I’d just tell him how surprised I was at how cute he was with both looks.
Let’s be clear on the choice I made: I was willing to give a compliment. That compliment was the opportunity to connect me to “Lane”. And I couldn’t have given that compliment if I hadn’t learned to accept a compliment, especially a compliment from myself.
Today, “Lane” and I are living together in our cute two story condo in SW Portland. Life is wonderful and filled with love. And we compliment and complement each other well.
Homework:
Give somebody a compliment in the next 24 hours.
Accept a compliment in the next 24 hours. Think there’s no one to compliment you? Give yourself one.
Please write to me and let me know how the compliment worked for you.
Truly Yours,
Joseph Lyons

Joey,
OMG! I must say “congrads” on the new man. I was wondering how you two met until I started reading your blog. I think it’s AWESOME that you blog because one of my other guilty pleasures (besides collecting Winnie-the-Pooh coffee mugs) is reading “Ross the Intern” blog everyday. Of course that leads to “Rosie ODonnell’s” blog (because Ross is such a huge fan of Rosie). I know, waste of time but Ross’s blog cracks me up. Maybe you should do a “Talky Blog” like he does with a web cam.
Anyway, now I’m going to be an avid reader of your blog because I think its really cool that you blog and have such a positive message. Plus, I know you.
Keep it up.
Cheers,
Noland and Bryan
