Changed My Life This Week
About 10 years ago I decided not to go into theater. I was studying theater in Ashland at Southern Oregon State College and realized that I would never make enough money in theater to pay my student bills – and that was a stupid business decision. So, after some years of “bumming” around, I went back to school to complete a Bachelors in Business Management and a Masters in Business Administration. Smart, right?
Now I’m studying to be a personal and business coach. When I started working with my coach three years ago I told Bill that under no circumstances were we to talk about my childhood dream of owning my own theater. He held that promise even when he decided, well in his 50s, to go into theater himself. I did a very good job of convincing myself that I was not meant to go into theater.
So, if you’ve been reading my blog you know that I went to the volunteer orientation for the Broadway Rose Theater last week. I got to go on stage where rehearsals were underway for Singing In The Rain. I got to go backstage and view the scenery that was being built. I got to talk to one of the founders of the theater company to whom I fessed up that she was living my dream.
10 years ago I was on a clear path to becoming a theater director. The plan was well spelled out, made sense on paper, and it didn’t work. When I truly allowed it to go, it came back to me with far greater opportunities than the box I had put myself in. Imagine what I could achieve as a director with a background as a life coach, business savvy, advanced computer knowledge, and a deeper passion and purpose than ever before. I never could have planned this.
Homework:
What was your childhood dream? What was it about that dream that excited you the most? Are you living that dream? If not, what stopped you?
May your work be truly playful, and your life be as full as you create it.
Truly Yours,
Joseph Lyons
