Money can’t buy me love
In a quick cursory glance at the internet just now, the phrase “money can’t buy me love” comes up in Yahoo search 927,000 times. If that’s really the truth, why does “get rich” show up 20,800,000 times?
What is it with our inconsistent world that tries to instill this altruistic vision of money that it’s not the solution to our ills. Then we turn on the TV and find The Bachelor, The Apprentice, Deal or No Deal, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Keeping up with the Kardashians, and the newest head shaker, Bravo’s Millionaire Matchmaker. This last show apparently wants to defy The Beatles’ anthem regarding both “money” and “love”.
I grew up listening to John, Paul, George, and Ringo – and I trust them more than reality TV. I trust them more than my Yahoo search. And if that means I’m in the minority then I think I’m on to something. I think that people still believe, unconsciously, that more money would solve their problems. More money would free their minds. “More money can make you happy!”
I don’t want to live in that world, where people are looking for money, not love – where people want income over joy – where people want investments over peace of mind. I guess in a way, I’d be at home Dr. Seuss’ Whoville. A land where if you wake up and Christmas isn’t there – you still sing, hold hands, and love on one another.
DANG. I just remembered another Beatles tune: All you need is love. That entire phrase comes up 3,960,000 times in Yahoo. The word “love” comes up 3.5 billion times in Yahoo. Maybe my world is Whoville after all. Maybe I can wake up and sing, hold hands, and love everyday.
Truly Yours,
Joseph Lyons
PS. I just looked up “money” in Yahoo. It comes up 3.9 billion times.
