Public Speaking and Fear

According to Wikipedia, fear of public speaking affects 75% of the population. Getting up in front of a group of people can bring up multiple fears of rejection, being seen as stupid, insigificance, etc.

Yesterday I spoke on a few Fearless Living principles at the Northwest Coach Association monthly meeting. Somehow I got up in front of the room, took a deep breath, and just started talking with a light outline, a handout, and a few notes. It was easy and calm and I felt as though I was really in my element.

A few people didn’t “get” it – and I realized it didn’t matter. I’d say at least 80% of the room was right on track with me. The highest compliment was that I met the gold standard of presentation and for that I’m grateful.

For some people, it’s a challenge to talk to strangers. For me, it’s more of a risk to speak to people I do know. I guess perhaps the stakes are higher and I so want to make a good impression. Making a good impression is a “should” or an “expectation” – the very thing I was talking to the group about.

My life intention is to connect. So, my intention during the presentation was to connect. I received a huge gift back in the connection from people back to me. It was an amazing experience and I’m thrilled to have that in my toolbox.

Homework – When you think of public speaking, what thoughts come up for you? What is it about public speaking that’s most difficult for you? Finally, write what you would like the experience to be like and describe the difference between the two thoughts.

By the way – I’m conducting a free class tonight called Fearless Holidays and you can join via phone! Send me a quick email and I’ll reply with the details!

Truly Yours,

Joseph Lyons
