Quantity of Life?

Who’s heard of the quantity of life? No one? Really?

Neither have I. And yet that’s all around us. How much does this or that cost? How much time will it take? How far away is it? How many calories are in that? I weigh so much, or, I need to gain about 10 pounds of muscle. What is my generation’s life expectancy? How old to I have to be to retire?

What we are really saying each time we say those words is that we value the quantity of life over the quality of life.

At my grandmother’s funeral, I read from one of the emails that she would often forward to the rest of the family. The last line of the email read, “Life isn’t about the number of breaths you take, but rather the number of moments that take your breath away.”

Where do you show up? How often do you think about time, money, weight, age, calories? How completely can you feel love, passion, joy, forgiveness, empathy?

Your homework is to journal about quantity over quality. What have you gotten out of your way of thinking? What have you missed? What would it take to shift your primary method thoughts from one to the other? Is it possible to have both, or are the two exclusive of each other?

I encourage you to send your thoughts to me! I love hearing what you have to say.

Truly Yours,

Joseph
