Rupaul says, “You Betta Work”

Over the past year I’ve known about 2 dozen people whose employment has changed. They may have been let go, quit, gotten a promotion, decided to look for work, or took a hiatus to continue their education.

Many people don’t like their work. They complain about it, and when confronted about their complaint - they argue that they are justified in their complaint. I’ve heard complaints from the lowest to the highest paid - so it’s not about money. The complaints come from business leaders to entry level workers - so it’s not power or control. I think it’s something much simpler to identify.

I think what many people miss with their work and their jobs is alignment. Alignment is a choice. Alignment is freedom. Alignment is up to you.

My favorite phrase from Rhonda Britten is, “Invest in the life you have to get the life you want.” My coach, Bill Grout, was the first to show me how to shift the word “life” to any word I want. So that phrase becomes, “Invest in the job you have to get the job you want.” Investment in a job is like aligning with a job. An investment has returns, so there must be a return in the investment in a job - that goes beyond money, power, control. It’s about being yourself.

Homework:

How can you be the best you at work? What are the parts of you that really shine through at work? What can you be grateful for at your work? What do you bring to a job that is truly unique? What are careers that you would most love to do? What is it about those careers that stir you - and how can your current job stir you in that same way?

Truly Yours,

Joseph Lyons

This is exactly what I needed to hear as I go into the 2008. I did not even realize until reading this that I had become one of those complainers about my job. And, it is a good job, one with a lot of reward. But I’ve become bored. So rather than being bored, and complaining, I set my intentions to invest in my job, to highlight that in the job that I am good at, that is my passion. I am grateful that I not only have the job that I have, that my career is on the right path, but that I have the ability to have my job become what I need it to be.

    Thanks.
