Singing in the Rain

I have been a huge fan of Singing in the Rain ever since I can remember. The music, the acting, the dancing - everything is just great. Last night I volunteered to sell concessions at the Broadway Rose Theater’s live performance of the show and it was tremendous! For those of you in the Portland/Tigard area, it runs until July 15th and I strongly recommend seeing the show. http://www.broadwayrose.com/

Something I love is the title song itself. There are great lyrics like, “I’m laughing at clouds, so dark up above. The sun’s in my heart and I’m ready for love.” There is such joy, openness, love, excitement, opportunity in such a few words. Then add the idea of singing out loud, dancing up a storm, and expressing your true feelings for everyone to see. Wow.

What do you think about someone that lives that big that they sing in the rain? There’s lots of “voices” we might hear:

  • “Gosh, I wish I could live my life like that, but I’m too embarrassed.”
  • “Don’t they have the sense to come in from out of the rain?”
  • “Geez, I can’t even stand the rain. It’s so dark and gloomy, how could anyone enjoy it ever?”
  • “Look, it’s raining! I could go out and make a complete fool of myself and make people laugh.”

(You can guess which one of the above voices is mine.)Â

Homework:

Journal on the following: What kind of people do you think sing in the rain? What do you feel about them? What does that judgement cost you? What is the benefit of that judgement? Who would you be if you were willing to sing and dance in the rain?

I would love to read your responses.

Truly Yours,

Joseph Lyons

    Joey,
I loved your blog!!! My favorite..absolutely favorite film!!! And how do I learn more about the production in Portland? I want to go.
I will be thinking about you as I finish up my current Fearbuster Group tonight, (honor commitments) and I am eager to join the group next week.
And yes, I love to dance in the rain. That could have something to do with my returning to Oregon after all these years.
    With love,
    Linda Jane

Hi there! I’m in Singin in the Rain at Bway Rose.

So glad that you liked it! It’s been a total blast, and definetly a challenge making the show as great as the movie. Hopefully we suceeded.

Thanks for coming! Your support keeps us going… literally :)

    Take care!

    Hi Megan,

Great to hear from you! I’ll be there again tonight as well, and I’m bringing my boyfriend along to volunteer with me.

My sister brought my 5 year old nephew who has loved the movie for the last 3 years. He sat up and paid very close attention to “Moses Supposes” - and he really loves “Make ‘em Laugh.”

I’m so glad to be part of the community and thanks for entertaining me! Break a leg tonight!

    Truly Yours,

    Joseph
